We use the age group classifications used by USA Field Hockey. That is, U10, U12, U14, and a combined U16/U19. To be classified as U10, a player must not yet be 10 years old on January 1, 2020. For a U12 classification, a player must be at least 10 years old, but not yet 12 years old. Similarly, U14 must be at least 12 years old, but not yet 14 on January 1, 2020. And so on for the other age divisions.
We play a 6v6 or 7v7 format for our games. Games will be played on half-field. Teams will consist of between 7 and 10 players, depending on registrations.
At a Glance
Our program averages 400 participants each year. The Optimist Club promotes youth field hockey in the Piedmont Triad Region of North Carolina and has been the catalyst in the formation of high school teams at Reagan, Parkland, and East Forsyth High Schools in Forsyth County. We offer grants to Triad area high schools who wish assistance in forming a field hockey program. We are one of the few developmental recreational programs in the Southeast USA. We field travel teams that participate in various competitive tournaments in the Atlantic region.
Our program is open to all players in grades 2 – 12, regardless of experience level. If you have never picked up a hockey stick, then this is the league for you. If you are an expert high school player then we have a spot for you and everyone in between. During the spring and fall seasons we practice one time each week and play one game on Saturdays at our home field located at Sherwood Forest Elementary School. Some of our games are played on the turf field at Kentner Stadium, home of the NCAA Wake Forest University Demon Deacons champion hockey team. From December through Mid-January our popular Indoor Winter session is enjoyed by many. Games are played on selected Sundays at the SoccerPlex off Silas Creek Parkway.
We have recently started inter-club play, where we invite other recreational clubs to play against us on our fields or travel to their fields. We do this once or twice per season.
If you are interested in participating in these travel opportunities please indicate so on your registration form.
