 The Optimist Club of Winston-Salem

The Optimist Club of Winston-Salem has been serving the youth of our community since 1948.  "Friend of Youth” is the club motto and guiding principle.  The club is a non-political, non-denominational civic club open to those who wish to serve the community.  Our members are women, men, business people, homemakers, retirees; just about anyone who has a few hours each month to volunteer.  Our members attend one or two meetings each month and participate in one to two club projects per year.

In addition to sponsoring youth sports programs, the Optimist Club sponsors an oratorical contest for middle school students and an essay contest for high school students.  Winning these contest can result in a significant awards of scholarship monies.  For more information about these contests please click on the Oratorical or Essay Contest tabs located under "Club Info".

Interested in encouraging and serving youth, membership in the Optimist Club may be for you!

Our annual Respect For Law Banquet is Monday, May 18, 2009, at the Hawthorne Inn and Conference Center at 7:00 PM.  Our speaker will be Clyde Tesh, former District Attorney and presently an attorney with Wells, Jenkins, Lucas & Jenkins PLLC.  This event is for members and invited guests.  Last year we had 100% participation.  Once again we will be honoring area law enforcement professionals from the North Carolina Highway Patrol, State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), Winston-Salem Police Department, Forsyth County Sheriffs Office (FCSO) and Town of Kernersville Police.

The Optimist Zone Oratorical Contest was held in Thomasville on April 7.  Our entrant, Ryan Gaylord from Bishop McGuiness Catholic High School, was the winner and will advance to the Regional competion in Albemarle, NC on April 20.

The Optimist Club has announced selections for the 2009 Community Service Programs.  Grants were made to the following organizations:  Boys and Girls Home, South Mountain Home, Optimist International Foundation, Optimist Childhood Cancer Research, Glycogen Storage Disease Research, Diggs Elementary School Partnership and the Goler Institute.

Proceeds from our sports programs fund the following club programs:  Youth Appreciation (11 college scholarships), Diggs Elementary School Faculty Appreciation, Respect for Law (honoring area law enforcement professionals), Muscular Dystrophy Association, Optimist Essay Contest, Oratorical Contest and Tax Aide for Senior Citizens.
